Beating Heart Surgery

Beating heart surgery is performed when only a single vessel needs to be bypassed. A small incision, approximately three inches long, is made between the patient’s ribs in either the right or left chest, under the breast. The heart maintains its own heartbeat so the heart-lung bypass machine is not needed during this type of bypass surgery.
