Cholesterol Lowering Agents: BILE ACID SEQUESTRANTS/BILE RESINS
| How they work: |
Possible Side effects: |
Special Notes: |
|
These medications bind to cholesterol in the gut, prevent its re-absorption, and lead to its removal in the stool. Cholesterol continuously moves between the blood, bile and gastrointestinal tract. Resins take advantage of this system to help reduce cholesterol levels. These medications have the advantage of remaining in the intestine and not being absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, liver and muscle problems do not occur with these medications. These medications typically lead to a drop in LDL cholesterol but also an increase in triglycerides. HDL cholesterol is usually increased by a very small amount.
