Cholesterol Lowering Agents: FISH OIL

How they work: Possible Side effects: Special Notes:
Fish oil is rich in what are called “omega-3 fatty acids.” Omega-3 fatty acids are very effective at lowering triglyceride levels. They may also prevent blood clot formation and reduce the risk of rhythm disturbances in your heart. Fish oil comes in 2 main forms: by taking capsules or naturally through the diet. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish, particularly fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, and albacore tuna, at least twice a week.

A weaker type of omega-3 fatty acid is also found in some plant sources such as tofu, soybeans, and canola and flaxseed oils.
No known side effects Because some types of fish may contain other substances, which may offset some of the benefits, please check with your provider before consuming larger quantities on a regular basis.
